Buffalo State Cares: QPR Suicide Prevention Training Workshops

The Buffalo State Counseling Center offers free QPR training on a monthly basis and upon request for students, faculty, staff, and groups. QPR stands for question, persuade, and refer—three simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. QPR training provides the knowledge and skills needed to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and to get someone who is contemplating suicide the help they need.

We would like Buffalo State to be a community of UPstanders as opposed to bystanders. A common myth is that asking a vulnerable person if he or she is considering suicide will give that person the idea to do so. Instead, it lowers anxiety, opens communication, and lowers the risk of an impulsive act. QPR workshop attendees are not trained to act as counselors but to listen and learn where to refer the struggling person for professional help. Help is available 24 hours a day by phone at (800) 273-TALK (8255). We can create a safety net for our community by listening non-judgmentally and instilling hope.

QPR workshops will be conducted in the Counseling Center 203 (second floor of Weigel Health Center) as follows:

Thursday, February 18, 11:00 a.m. noon
Thursday, March 17, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
Friday, April 1, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
Friday, April 15, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Please call 878-4436 or e-mail counselingcenter@buffalostate.edu to schedule a session.

Additional trainings are available for classes or other campus organizations upon request. Please contact Ron George, outreach coordinator, for more information or to schedule a training.
