Guest Speaker Melanie Reim: 'Accidental Fashion Illustrators' - March 30

Join the Fashion and Textile Technology Department in welcoming back Melanie Reim, professor in the School of Art and Design and the School of Graduate Studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), for the presentation "Accidental Fashion Illustration" on Thursday, March 30, during Bengal Pause (12:30–1:30 p.m.) in Technology Building 160.

Professor Reim is an award-winning illustrator with a sketchbook never far from her side. She is a Buffalo State alumna who earned her M.F.A. in illustration from Syracuse University. Since then, she has illustrated for book publishers, advertising agencies, museums, magazines, and major corporations.

Professor Reim is the founder and former chair of the M.F.A. program in illustration at FIT, where she currently teaches. She also teaches drawing and illustration on both the graduate and undergraduate levels in the United States and abroad. She received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Faculty Service and the SUNY/FIT President’s Award for Student Centeredness, and she is a Fulbright scholar. She is one of three cofounders of the FIT President’s Council on Diversity, and has served on the Presidential Planning Council for Strategic Planning and the FIT Brand Consortium. Her visual journals have been the subject of articles published out of London, the UK, and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Her documentary work is part of the Air Force Art Collection in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and is featured in numerous books and articles about drawing and illustration. Her work has been included in the Society of Illustrators NY Annual Show, SILA, the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles Annual Show, and American Illustration. Her work has also appeared in many solo and group exhibitions in New York City and abroad.

Professor Reim has served as education chair for the board of directors at the Society of Illustrators in New York City and ICON: The Illustration Conference, where she advocates a rich and well-rounded education for illustration students everywhere, as they are the future of the industry.
