Preview of the U.S. Supreme Court's Upcoming Term: October 7

Peter Yacobucci, associate professor of political science, will present a preview of the U.S. Supreme Court's October 2015 term on Wednesday, October 7, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center West 2. All members of the Buffalo State community are invited to attend. The cases under consideration by the Supreme Court this term include:

  • The importance of race or ethnicity in university admissions and financial aid decisions

  • The requirement of union dues in employment contracts

  • Retroactively applying the court's prohibition on life sentences without parole for juveniles

  • The general constitutionality and various applications of the death penalty

  • The inherent cruelty of solitary confinement of prisoners

  • Warrantless police searches of cell phones and other electronic communication devices

  • The limits of voting rights based on race or ethnicity and the equality of voting districts
