Tell Students: Two Student Employment Opportunities for 2018-2019

Academic Success is now accepting applications for Peer Mentoring and Supplemental Instruction leaders for 2018–2019. Online applications will be available until Thursday, May 31. Phone interviews and hiring will occur in June 2018, and positions begin in late August 2018.

Brief position descriptions follow; additional position details and online applications can be found on the Academic Success website.

Peer Mentors
Peer mentors get paid to help new students connect to Buffalo State, provide suggestions and guidance to first-year students, expand their Bengal social network, sharpen professional skills they can use in their careers, build their résumés, and are student leaders on campus. Under the supervision of the coordinator of retention initiatives, peer mentors are well-trained in the exciting opportunities that Buffalo State provides for its students, campus resources, and college policies and procedures. Peer mentors connect with their first-year mentees from the start of the fall semester through the end of the spring semester to ensure that they are finding their way to academic success at Buffalo State. Peer mentors share what they know about being successful students who meet their academic goals while living an engaged and exciting extracurricular life at Buffalo State.

Senior Peer Mentors
A small number of peer mentors are offered positions as senior peer mentors. Senior peer mentors are assigned a group of peer mentors whom they assist with fulfilling the responsibilities of the peer mentor position (e.g., answering questions, brainstorming ideas to engage students, supporting peer mentors in their dual role of student-staff) and observe periodically throughout the semester to provide constructive feedback for performance improvement. Additionally, senior peer mentors have additional meetings with the coordinator of retention initiatives to discuss opportunities for program improvement. An additional stipend of $100 per semester is offered to senior peer mentors. Preference for senior peer mentor positions goes to students with at least junior standing and prior Buffalo State peer mentoring experience (e.g., resident assistant, BEAT Team member).

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders
SI leaders get paid to work with an instructor they admire, build their résumés, and reinforce what they have learned in a challenging course. Under the supervision of the coordinator of retention initiatives, SI leaders are trained in planning and facilitating collaborative learning in regularly scheduled study sessions (a.k.a. supplemental instruction sessions or SI hours) for Buffalo State students who are enrolled in targeted courses. SI sessions are scheduled group meeting times in which SI leaders help students in the SI course review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for assignments and examinations. SI leaders assist other Buffalo State students in achieving their academic goals while furthering their own.
