The Philosophy Department is pleased to announce the inaugural lecture in the Mary Lou Littlefield Speaker Series in Philosophy, “Transform Your Destiny,” presented by Raymond Angelo Belliotti, Distinguished Teaching Professor from SUNY Fredonia, on Monday, April 23, at 3:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center South.

In the course of building our characters, nurturing healthy personal relationships, and fulfilling our moral duties to other people, we must confront larger sometimes frightening questions: Does human life have inherent meaning? If so, what is the nature of that meaning and how do we cultivate it? If not, is it possible for human beings to still create their own fragile meaning? How might that be accomplished and of what does its value consist?

The annual Mary Lou Littlefield Speaker Series in Philosophy has been established by Mrs. Littlefield’s daughter, Adele Littlefield Cloutier, ’81, and granddaughter Emily Elise Cloutier, ’18. Mary Lou Littlefield worked at Buffalo State for more than 20 years, joining the Research Foundation in 1972 and serving in several departments across campus, including the Peace Corps Office and Admissions Office, and as an administrative assistant to President D. Bruce Johnstone in the 1980s. Adele Littlefield Cloutier, a licensed real estate agent, graduated from Buffalo State in 1981 with a bachelor of science in business and marketing. Emily Elise Cloutier, who will graduate this May with a bachelor of arts in philosophy, received the 2018 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, the highest student award given in SUNY.
