Change to Kanopy Streaming

Butler Library introduced Kanopy video streaming a little over a year ago. Unlike other database subscriptions, Kanopy uses a patron demand acquisitions model, meaning that more usage results in higher costs. Because of high demand, the cost of Kanopy has exceeded its budget allocation for the fiscal year, resulting in the following change to the service.

Starting February 20, only the films for which the library has purchased streaming rights will be available on Kanopy until the film’s license expiration date (found by clicking on its title). All other titles will be unavailable for streaming, although information about those films will still be available through searches.

Faculty members who would like to obtain access to unlicensed films for use in their classes may contact Marianne Foley, head of acquisition services and systems, 878-6306.

Residents of New York state may also use Kanopy to stream films through the New York Public Library. The NYPL provides cardholders with streaming access for up to 10 movies a month through Kanopy. Learn how New York state residents can apply for a free New York Public Library card and create a personal account with NYPL’s Kanopy service.
