Screening and Panel Discussion - 'Fire in the Heartland: Kent State, May 4th, and Student Protest in America' - April 26

The Burchfield Penney Art Center and Buffalo State College will present a film screening and panel discussion of Fire in the Heartland: Kent State, May 4th, and Student Protest in America, a compelling documentary about the fatal shootings at Kent State, on Thursday, April 26, at at 7:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium.

On May 4, 1970, National Guard troops opened fire on unarmed antiwar protesters at Kent State University in Ohio, killing four students and wounding nine others, including Buffalo resident Thomas Grace, assistant professor of history at Erie Community College. The shootings shocked the American public, triggering a nationwide wave of campus strikes and protests that involved several million people, most of them young.

A panel discussion moderated by Dr. Grace, author of Kent State: Death and Dissent in the Long Sixties, will follow the film. Panelists include John Abromeit, associate professor of history and social studies education; and Gail Radford, professor of history, and Michael Frisch, professor emeritus of history, at the University at Buffalo. Copies of Dr. Grace's book will be available for purchase and signing, courtesy of Talking Leaves.

Admission is free for students, faculty, and members of the Burchfield Penney and $5 for the general public. This event is sponsored by the Burchfield Penney Art Center and the Buffalo State departments of History and Social Studies Education, Political Science, and Sociology.
