Information Security Awareness: Equifax Data Breach Is Worse Than Thought

The BBC, CBS, CSO, and other news outlets are reporting on documents that Equifax submitted to the Senate Banking Committee indicating that the data breach was much larger than the company disclosed last year, including such information as tax ID numbers, credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, addresses, and phone numbers. Business Insider tells readers that freezing their credit likely will not help. Consumers can use the Equifax “Am I Impacted” site to see if their information was compromised, but even those who find they're not affected cannot presume this information is accurate. Know your rights. Visit the NYS Division of Consumer Protection. Note that New York State Attorney General Schneiderman is proposing enhanced protections for consumers.
