Nutrition Education Study for Cancer Survivors

The Buffalo State Health, Nutrition, and Dietetics Department invites cancer survivors who are at least one year beyond the completion of their cancer treatment to participate in the Nutrition Education Study for Cancer Survivors. A registered dietitian, Tina Colaizzo-Anas, will supervise the nutrition education that will be delivered by Katie Jastrzab, a senior in Buffalo State’s dietitian education program. Thirty-two participants will be enrolled in the study. Half the participants will be chosen at random to receive nutrition education using guidelines from the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) via grocery store tours. The other half will receive the same AICR nutrition education in the Buffalo State Nutrition Education and Counseling Center (NECC). Participants may not choose which type of nutrition education they receive (grocery store vs. NECC). The study involves one visit to the NECC in Caudell Hall at the beginning of the study to conduct nutrition assessments and one visit either to Wegmans on Amherst Street in Buffalo or to the NECC for nutrition education. The nutrition education session will last approximately 60 minutes. Physician referrals for nutrition education will be requested. All information collected will be labeled with an ID number only; no other identifying information will be attached to the research data.

Eligible participants must be at least 18 years old with a previous cancer diagnosis who are a minimum of one year post-treatment. Participants are not limited to Buffalo State employees, staff, or students. Interested parties should e-mail DEP@buffalostate.edu and leave their name, telephone number, and best time to call. We will respond by telephone and ask a few questions to ensure that interested parties are eligible to participate in the study.
