Professional Development Workshops: Supervisor Micro-Learning Roundtables

Supervisor Micro-Learning (SML) Roundtables are hour-long professional development workshops for supervisors to learn one new high-impact strategy or tool that can be implemented immediately to further enhance leadership practices. All roundtables will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. in Butler Library 181B. Each SML roundtable will be conducted in the following format:

1. Develop a new strategy or tool to further enhance supervision practices (morning meeting with coffee and snacks).

 ►  9:00 a.m. – Supervisors learn the new strategy or tool. 

 ►  9:30 a.m. – Supervisors develop a plan to implement the new strategy or tool within their unit. 

2. Supervisors implement the new strategy or tool within their unit. 

3. Supervisors meet one month later for one hour at a time that is convenient for the group (scheduled by the Professional Development Center) to share their progress, learn from each other’s experiences, and provide suggestions for next steps.

Identifying and Aligning Resources to Attain Unit/Divisional Goals 
Tuesday, March 6
Supervisors will learn how to perform an “Impact and Effort Matrix” with their unit to better identify how resources (people, time, and money) can be aligned to support the projects and initiatives that have the highest impact on meeting unit or divisional goals.  

Strengthening Leadership Capacities with Emotional and Social Intelligence 
Wednesday, March 21
Emotional and social intelligence is the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions effectively in ourselves and in others. Individuals with high emotional and social intelligence work more effectively with others in leadership roles or as members of a team. During this session, supervisors will explore the connection between emotional and social intelligence and leadership effectiveness using the Emotional and Social Competency Inventory (ESCI). Using the results of the ESCI, supervisors will have an opportunity to identify developmental pathways to further enhance leadership effectiveness.

Delivering Effective Employee Feedback 
Thursday, April 26
Supervisors will learn how to deliver feedback to employees to address areas for improvement, identify solutions to employee concerns, and build agreement among employees.
