Spotlight on Community-Engaged Faculty and Community Partners: Concordia Cemetery

Throughout the academic year, the Civic and Community Engagement Office will highlight the efforts of our community-engaged and service-learning faculty members and community partners. We are grateful to all our faculty members who are engaged in this important work.

At Buffalo’s Concordia Cemetery, listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, every headstone tells a story. Limited solely to online collections, students in lecturer Noelle Wiedemer’s Digital Museum Collections course have been combing through census records, Army rosters, newspapers, and business listings to find birth dates, occupations, progeny, and military service records for 10 Civil War veterans interred there. Once completed, these stories will be used by interpreters at the cemetery to share the soldiers’ history with visitors. The staff is most impressed by the students’ professionalism, work ethic, creativity, and passion for all things museum.

Please consider giving your support to Concordia Cemetery. You can volunteer your time and talents by serving on the genealogy and research, fundraising and development, foundations events, or finance committees. You can also put your landscaping and gardening skills to good use! Leadership positions with the board of directors and officer positions are also possibilities. Membership and volunteer applications are available on the cemetery's website. Follow the Friends of Concordia Cemetery on Facebook. If you wish to make a monetary donation, please visit the website for more information.
