Why I Give: United Way Contributions Make a Difference

From the SEFA/United Way Campaign Co-chair
This year, we will feature a few short stories to tell in a very personal way why individual faculty and staff members choose to give to United Way agencies.

While there are so many wonderful agencies who benefit from our United Way gifts, it is my pleasure every fall to remember my father, Donald W. Paterson, a Boy Scout leader of 37 years, by designating my payroll deduction to the United Way, Niagara Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America. My dad came home from WWII, and part of normalizing his life was to offer service and leadership to the BSA at First United Methodist Church on Baynes and Potomac, not far from Buffalo State. His work with boys and young men made a difference in their lives beyond just the Thursday-night meetings or the monthly camping excursions. Everything I learned about leadership, including generosity of spirit, the importance of kindness, and the value of respect and honor, I learned from my dad. I honor him by making sure that scouting remains an important opportunity for all boys and girls.
