This showy mountain-ash, or northern mountain-ash (Sorbus decora), located on the south side of Neumann Hall near Rockwell Road, was one of more than 35 trees of various varieties that were planted in November 2019 by a volunteer group, organized and funded by proceeds donated by the Friends of the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum.
This is a native tree, more common in eastern Ontario, Quebec, and the New England states. This tree species is in the rosacea family of plants, making it more closely related to apple trees than the true ash trees (hence the hyphen in the common names). In the spring, these trees display beautiful creamy white flowers—and in the summer, Buffalo State orange berries!
