Bengal Birthday Week: Honoring Buffalo State’s Women Leaders -- Gertrude Bacon

Gertrude Bacon joined the faculty of the Buffalo Normal School in 1887 and would remain there until her retirement in 1936.

Buffalo State University opened its doors September 13, 1871—152 years ago this week. The first Buffalo Normal School class of 86 students included 75 women and 11 men, all being trained as teachers for Western New York’s fast-growing public schools. Numerous women served as members of the original faculty. From the beginning, women have played a pivotal role in the growth and development of Buffalo State.

“I am honored to be connected to an institution that from its founding has demonstrated a commitment to the education and training of women for important academic, professional, and leadership roles at a time when it was not fashionable or popular,” said Buffalo State Interim President Bonita R. Durand, Ph.D. “I count myself fortunate to be among those women who have experienced tremendous support and mentoring at this great university.”

As we celebrate Bengal Birthday Week 2023, we highlight the contributions of five Buffalo State founding women who inspired future generations of leaders.
