James Robert Gerland Sr., an esteemed adjunct professor for many years (including fall semester 2025) in the CIS department at Buffalo State, passed away suddenly on December 23, 2025. Jim was an invaluable asset the CIS department, teaching important required and elective courses in the program. Prior to coming to Buffalo State, Jim worked in a variety of Buffalo area businesses and institutions, including serving as director of information technology in the School of Informatics at the University of Buffalo, and as director of engineering training at Synacor Inc. Jim’s students enjoyed his enthusiastic and knowledgeable presence in the classroom. Jim will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues at Buffalo State.
