Weigel Health Center: CDC Respiratory Virus Guidance

Posted:

Cold and flu season is starting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its guidelines regarding COVID 19 and has issued Respiratory Virus Guidance, rather than virus specific guidance. The updated guidelines can be found here: Preventing Respiratory Illnesses | Respiratory Illnesses | CDC

If you have a respiratory illness:

  • If you are sick, wear a mask to protect yourself and others. Practice social distancing, avoid crowds, do not share food/drinks/vape pens/cigarettes, and avoid being around people who may have other medical conditions.
  • You can continue normal daily activities as long as you are fever-free without the use of medication. Please follow standard respiratory guidance as referenced above.
  • If you have severe symptoms (which include fever greater than 100.3 degrees, shortness of breath, chest pain, etc.), call the Weigel Health Center at (716) 878-6711 and avoid normal activities until medical evaluation. If there is an emergency, contact University Police at (716) 878-6333.
  • If you had severe symptoms, you can go back to normal activities when your symptoms are improving, and you have been fever free without the use of medication for at least 24 hours.
  • When you return to normal activities, take extra precautions over the next five (5) days (mask wear, wash hands, etc.).
  • If you develop a fever or start to feel worse after you had been improving, call the Weigel Health Center.
  • Help prevent spread and protect yourself and others by practicing frequent hand washing, covering your mouth/nose when coughing/sneezing, and cleaning commonly touched surfaces.

What to do about class or work? If you are unable to attend class or go to work, please notify your professors/employer to ensure you can get assignments, and/or notes that you will be missing while you are out.

  • In the event of three (3) or more consecutive days of absence due to serious health issues, students are directed to contact the Dean of Students Office and complete an absence notification.

What if I test positive for COVID? Follow the guidelines above; formal isolation/quarantine is no longer required.

We do not provide excuse notes for missed classes due to routine illnesses. Please refer to our Excuse Policy for details: https://weigel.buffalostate.edu/.

Weigel will be partnering with Wegmans for Flu Vaccine clinics in October 2025; please visit the Weigel Health Center website for more information.

If masks are needed, please visit the Weigel Health Center and they will be provided.
