Biology-GLC Seminar: 'The Complexities of Human Error' - February 26

Please join the Biology Department and the Great Lakes Center for the seminar “The Complexities of Human Error,” presented by Pam Trevino, Ph.D., R.N., chief quality and safety officer for John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital, on Monday, February 26, at 3:00 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 151. Attendees are welcome to enjoy coffee and cookies during the seminar.

Abstract
To err is human… but what happens when those errors can be a matter of life and death? In 1999, the Institute on Medicine published To Err Is Human, a landmark publication in which the IOM declared that up to 90,000 deaths per year were the result of medical error. Since this publication, health-care systems have been trying to understand human error and design systems that support good decision making. Unlike other industries that have found significant success in becoming highly reliable, health care continues to struggle. Between the differences between patients and the way their diseases respond to treatment, cognitive and diagnostic bias, and complexity compression, designing a safe system for patient care is complicated. This seminar will discuss the extent of medical errors, the ways humans make mistakes, clinical decision making, ways to prevent medical errors, and how system design can help protect patients from harm.
