Biology-GLC Seminar: 'Plant Community Shifts in Lake Ontario Coastal Wetlands' - October 23

Please join the Biology Department and the Great Lakes Center for the seminar “Plant Community Shifts in Lake Ontario Coastal Wetlands," presented by Aaron W. Heminway, biologist with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, on Monday, October 23, at 3:00 p.m. the Science and Mathematics Complex 151. Attendees are welcome to arrive at 2:30 p.m. to enjoy coffee and cookies before the seminar.

Abstract
Changes in land use, hydrology, and nutrient inputs over the past 100 years have led to shifts in community composition and loss of coastal wetlands in the Great Lakes. The largest, most notable changes are encroachment of invasive cattail species into sedge meadows. Heminway and colleagues studied coastal wetlands of Lake Ontario with varying hydrogeomorphic classifications, mapped land use in their watersheds, and performed growth experiments to help understand these changes.
