Banner is the official system of record and students (receiving credit or auditing) who need access to a course should follow the campus processes for registration through Banner. They will appear on the Brightspace roster automatically. However, certain roles may need to be added manually such as Graduate Assistants, Student Assistants, or Peer Observers. Students whose default account in Brightspace is from another SUNY school may also need to be manually added to an Organization by a Brightspace admin. At the end of the semester, faculty may also request students to have “Incomplete” access to continue their course work without having to change the content in Brightspace or reopen the entire course to all students.
The User Roles in Brightspace Knowledge Base article defines the various options for users in the platform.
Submit a ticket through the Learning Management System (D2L Brightspace) - Add User to Roster service in the IT Portal to manage your roster.
- The user being added to the roster should be informed what their role in the course will be in addition to any campus procedure and policy related to the protection of faculty intellectual property, academic integrity, and privacy policies - especially FERPA.
- Students in the course should be informed that an additional member of the campus has been added to the Brightspace course and informed of what they can see (i.e., Educational Records protected under FERPA) and the reasons for which this person is within the Brightspace course.
