Katheryn Whittemore Tree Rededication - September 30

Posted:

As a community, it is good at times to pause and reflect on our past and on the many who have contributed to Buffalo State. This is one such moment. One hundred years ago Katheryne T. Whittemore (one of Buffalo State’s founding mothers) was hired to teach geography. The ‘Grand Lady of Geography’ (as she was known by her colleagues) had a 37-year teaching, research, and administrative career at Buffalo State College. She established the Geography Department, served as the inaugural Dean of the Division of Arts and Sciences. She was also a member of what we know today as Buffalo State’s Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum.

We are celebrating her career with a replanting and rededication of the Whittemore tree as a tribute in her honor. Please join us on Tuesday, September 30th (Bengal Pause, 12:30 pm) on the verge between SAMC and Lot I-36 for the unveiling of her plaque and for a few words about her career. If it rains, the event will be moved to the north end of the SAMC atrium.
