Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Event: April 28
Join the Social Work Department on Tuesday, April 28, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. to honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) to raise awareness about the disproportionate and systemic violence, disappearances, and homicides experienced by Indigenous women and girls.
The event begins on the steps of Rockwell Hall (facing Elmwood Avenue) and the group will walk to Caudell Hall, following a path of red clothing, statistics, and information about MMIW. At the end of the walk, participants can place their handprint in red paint on a banner. The red handprint is symbolic of the silenced voices of Indigenous women, the lack of media attention around this issue, and the lack of law enforcement’s commitment to justice in these cases. Participants are encouraged to wear red.
