New Courses:
BIO 622 Foundations of Animal Development. Prerequisite: At least one upper-division undergraduate course in cell or molecular biology, or instructor permission. Fundamental principles and processes of animal development with emphasis on molecular and cell mechanisms underlying differentiation, pattern formation, morphogenesis, and regeneration. Topics include fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation, and organogenesis. Experimental paradigms and techniques explored through primary literature. Offered every other year, beginning spring 2023.

BIO 661 Quantitative PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). Prerequisite: BIO 303 or equivalent. Theory and practice of quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), a technique used to quantify nucleic acid molecules in biological and environmental samples. Emphasis on experimental design, instrumentation, data analysis, and MIQE standards. Offered occasionally, beginning spring 2023.

BIO 662 Immunofluorescence Microscopy. Prerequisite: BIO 314 or BIO 440 or equivalent. Theory and practice of immunofluorescence (IF) microscopy, a technique used to determine the subcellular localization of proteins in a wide range of fixed cells or tissues using specific antibodies and fluorescence microscopy. Emphasis on experimental design, procedures, instrumentation, and data analysis. Offered occasionally, beginning spring 2023.

BIO 663 Western Blot. Prerequisite: BIO 305 or BIO 440 or equivalent. Theory and practice of Western blot, a laboratory technique used to detect and quantify specific proteins in cell or tissue extracts. Emphasis on experimental design, procedure, instrumentation, and data analysis. Offered occasionally, beginning spring 2023.

BIO 664 Animal Care and Handling in the Laboratory. Prerequisite: Instructor permission. Theory and practice of handling and care of non-primate animals in a laboratory setting. Overview of animal handling, care, and management for biomedical experiments. Special emphasis on rodent models commonly used in biomedical and cancer research. Offered occasionally, beginning spring 2023.

EXE 572 Teaching Adolescents with Disabilities. Prerequisite: EXE 500 or equivalent. Focus on instructional procedures necessary for effective teaching of adolescent students with disabilities and those with diverse or complex support needs. Adaptations and management strategies for supporting the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs of adolescent students with disabilities. Offered occasionally, beginning fall 2022.

EXE 641 Adolescent Literacy and Students with Mild Disabilities. Prerequisite: EXE 521. Methods, strategies, and resources for teaching students with disabilities in grades 6–12 who struggle to read complex narrative and expository text. Offered every semester, beginning fall 2022.

EXE 643 Advanced Methods in Teaching Math to Secondary Students with Disabilities. Prerequisites: EXE 501, EXE 502, and EXE 503. Effective math instruction for students with disabilities at the secondary level. Emphasis on application of research-based math strategies across domains of math content knowledge. Differentiated instruction, technology integration, and effective mindsets to meet the needs of diverse learners. Offered every semester, beginning fall 2022.

FOR 475 Capstone Research in Forensic Chemistry. Prerequisites: FOR 312 and CHE 404. Forensic chemistry research on a topic agreed upon by the faculty and student. Creation of a written research plan for investigation of the topic through either laboratory or field research methods. Collection, documentation, and analysis of research data. Preparation of a formal research report and presentation at a conference or seminar. Offered occasionally, beginning fall 2022.

NFS 435 Senior Research Seminar. Prerequisites: NFS 403 and NFS 430. Detailed exploration of an area of interest in dietetics or nutrition chosen by the student. Includes review of the scientific literature, preparation of a reference paper, and presentation of findings to peers. Offered spring semester, beginning spring 2023.

SWK 230 Intersectionality of Difference. Exploration of culture, diversity, inclusion, personal biases, power, privilege, intersectionality, and the role of social work in addressing anti-racism, anti-discrimination, and anti-oppression. Offered every semester, beginning fall 2022.

SWK 302 Social Justice Advocacy. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. Overview of human rights, social injustices, and social justice advocacy. Discussion of activist efforts, including social movements and voting. Student reflection on their own involvement as social justice advocates. Use of Just Practice foundation framework to understand social justice with social work. Offered every semester, beginning spring 2023.

SWK 330 Foundations of Social Work. Prerequisites or corequisites: SWK 101, SWK 201, SWK 230, and SWK 302; social work majors only. Focus on the practice behaviors and skills used in social work. Emphasis on social work professionalism and professional skills, social work ethics, engagement at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels using Just Practice social justice framework, and the role of the social worker within human services organization and the community. Offered fall semester, beginning fall 2022.

SWK 340 Applied Social Work. Prerequisite: SWK 330; social work majors only. Assessment and application of theoretical perspectives of social work using the Just Practice social justice approach to social work on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. Overview of foundational theories used to create the Just Practice social justice framework. Offered spring semester, beginning spring 2023.

SWK 350 Social Work in Action. Prerequisite: SWK 330; social work majors only. Evidence-based interventions and ethical implementation of interventions at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels using the Just Practice social justice approach to social work with diverse populations across the life cycle. Offered spring semester, beginning spring 2023.

SWK 201 Professional Skills for Social Workers (W). Focus on the professional obligations of a social worker, including skills and ethics used in social work. Emphasis on social work as a science-based profession. Offered fall semester, beginning fall 2022.

BIO 322 Genes and Society (formerly BIO 322 Human Heredity). Prerequisite: BIO 100 or BIO 101 or BIO 111. The influence of genes on the human condition, including diseases, behavior and evolution, and the emerging technologies to alter human genes. Offered occasionally, beginning spring 2023.

BIO 412 Developmental Biology. Prerequisites: BIO 211 and BIO 305 or BIO 314 or BIO 333. Principles and processes of animal development with emphasis on molecular, cellular, and physical mechanisms. Topics include cell fate specification, axis formation, fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation, organogenesis, and regeneration. Comparative aspects of development across different phyla of the animal kingdom. Offered every other year, beginning spring 2023.

BIO 450 Recombinant DNA Technology. Prerequisite: BIO 303 or BIO 314. Extensive hands-on experience using the techniques of biotechnology. Emphasis on techniques involving the construction of recombinant DNA molecules and their analysis. Offered every other year, beginning spring 2023.
