Data Science and Analytics Seminar Series–Spring 2025
Date and Time: Monday, March 3, 4:30 to 5:45 p.m.
Location: Bacon Hall 115 or Zoom ID 718 634 0613
Speaker: Dr. H. David Sheets, master's program director and instructional professor of data science, Merrimack College
Talk Title: Entropy-Based Measures of Performance in Forensics
Key Discussion Points:
- Leveraging cross entropy to evaluate performance metrics
- Advancements in forensic science methodologies
- Integrating artificial intelligence techniques with human examiner insights
About Dr. Sheets:
Trained as a physicist, Dr. Sheets has built a distinguished career as an applied data scientist. He has collaborated with interdisciplinary teams to address a wide range of research questions, publishing work in fields as diverse as biology, entomology, forensics, paleobiology, physics, anthropology, and art conservation. As a co-author of a leading textbook on geometric morphometrics, he has helped pioneer innovative approaches to hypothesis testing based on the shapes of organisms. Today, his research focuses on refining performance measures for forensic examinations—ranging from firearms analysis to handwriting evaluation—and applying cutting-edge data science techniques to the study of surface textures in art.
Join us for an inspiring session that bridges traditional forensic practices with forward-thinking data science innovations.
