Elimination of Single Use Plastics

Procurement Services would like to remind the campus of the SUNY procedure for elimination of single use plastics in order to comply with Policy 5201. The policy details a staged elimination of single-use plastics designed to take advantage of the continued development of new products and processes for a future plastic-free environment. Items covered in the policy include bags, beverage bottles, food service products, utensils, plastic wrap, and packaging films.

Buffalo State University and the State University of New York are required to comply with existing state procurement law. SUNY has set practical and attainable requirements for its campuses, and their affiliated organizations, to eliminate the use of plastic items generally recognized as being designed for single use.

This Policy 5201 Elimination of Single Use Plastics and Preference for Durable and Reusable Alternatives defines various categories of single use plastics and sets a priority preference for actions working toward the full elimination goal.

It also directs campuses to strive to eliminate products generally recognized as being designed for single use ahead of the designated schedules in the related procedure, prioritizing durable and reusable alternatives.

Requests to purchase prohibited items will be reviewed in Bengal Buy. Questions regarding this policy can be directed to Kristy Mediak, Director of Procurement Services & Strategic Sourcing, smithkm@buffalostate.edu
