Drawing with Subtraction: Creating by Revealing is a free workshop for the Buffalo State community. The instructor, Kathy Shiroki, manages University and Adult programs at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Come and create on Wednesday, May 28, from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. If you only have an hour, attend the first half of the session. Free for SUNY Buffalo State faculty, staff, and students. All supplies included.
Dive into a creative exploration where subtraction is the key to artmaking. In this hands-on workshop, participants will experiment with "drawing by subtraction"—removing elements from an image rather than adding to it. Using recycled children's books with hardcovers and cardboard pages, participants will engage in a unique artistic process that focuses on what is left behind rather than what is added. Starting with smaller works to warm up, you'll use a fat black Sharpie to either reveal or cover up parts of the image, allowing your composition to evolve through the act of subtraction. Each stroke of the marker is a decision about what to leave visible and what to obscure, with the final artwork emerging from the pages of a repurposed book. By the end of the workshop, you'll have created a personal work of art that highlights the beauty of minimalism and the power of editing. Perfect for participants who are looking for a fresh, unconventional approach to their creative practice, this workshop invites you to explore the intersection of drawing, composition, and storytelling—all through the process of subtraction. No experience required.
