Join Us at the ‘BOW Lounge’: Bengals on Wellness

Weigel Health Promotion is setting up a portable “Bengals on Wellness (BOW) Lounge” this semester in the Campbell Student Union outside the bookstore.

The new “BOW Initiative: Bengals on Wellness,” launched this fall, begins to build a new culture that welcomes wellness to the Buffalo State campus community in various ways. Buffalo State members are encouraged to proactively seek information and resources on wellness. This space will be a place where all students, faculty, and staff members can come to grab some popcorn; check out a schedule of upcoming wellness workshops, trainings, and speakers; participate in stress-reduction activities such as making a stress ball, coloring a mandala, or playing a game; learn how to schedule an appointment with the health or counseling center; or learn about different community agencies that may better support their needs. Activities on any given day may include therapy dogs, free Q&A sessions and blood pressure readings with Weigel nurses, brief mindfulness exercises and information with Buffalo State counselors, dietetics and health and wellness students providing posters and presentations, collaborations with dining services, and more.

With the world opening up a little more each day since the pandemic, several issues have become apparent. People want to interact with other people again. Most people want to come to a health center only if they absolutely need to or are sick, not for “fun” or extracurricular activities like programs or workshops. We are bringing students to campus who have not been socializing in ways that are typical or healthy for their age (increased isolation, greater screen time for education, socialization, fun, work). Physical and mental health has been largely ignored because students have been isolated from peers, teachers, and other professionals who might have otherwise sensed something and intervened. Many people have engaged in unhealthy coping skills, and the world has even begun to “normalize” these unhealthy behaviors in some ways.

Opportunities to increase wellness on our campus are at our fingertips. If you would like to represent your department or know of a fantastic campus or community organization that may be interested in tabling with us, please sign up online.

Please see the full schedule of events online and check back often. Follow us on social media, where we will post any last-minute additions, updates, or cancellations as necessary.
