Lumi AI Tools available in Brightspace for Faculty Only

Instructors and Course Builders now have access to D2L’s Lumi AI tools in Brightspace. While faculty members do not have to use these tools, they can assist with:

  1. Quiz Question Generation (Link to Help Document)
  2. Assignment ideas generation (link to help document)
  3. Discussion ideas generation (link to help document)
  4. Module overview ideas generation (link to help document)

Lumi leverages Anthropic’s Large Language Model (LLM) Claude by using content provided by the course creator. SUNY’s agreement with D2L protects Faculty IP by ensuring that:

  • D2L does not own input content.
  • D2L does not own output content.
  • D2L will not use input content to train the Generative AI models.

SUNY’s agreement with D2L requires that users will not represent that output content is human generated when it is not. Therefore, a syllabus statement or similar notification should be used in courses where Lumi is used.

Training will be provided by SUNY throughout the months of August and September. Support issues should go through the SUNY Online Support Services Help Desk.

For more information including sample syllabus statements, ethical concerns, and environmental impacts, please see the Brightspace Lumi (AI Components for Faculty) Knowledge Base article.

SUNY will be covering the cost of the Lumi add-on to Brightspace until September 23, 2026, at which time, each campus will likely need to decide on purchasing it individually going forward.
