Buffalo State University has participated in the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) since 2014. The 2022 report is published, and the data has demonstrated that voting rates have continued to improve overall, with voter registration rates of 63.8 percent in 2014 to 70.1 percent in 2018, 75 percent in 2020, and 67.5 percent in 2022.
Voting rates of registered Buffalo State students have also continued to improve, from 20.3 percent in 2014 to 40.3 percent in 2018, 68.3 percent in 2020, and 35.7 percent in 2022. Despite these increases, Buffalo State still has a lower voting rate than peer institutions (24.1 percent voting rate of Buffalo State students compared with 30.6 percent of public masters institutions in 2022). As a result, summer voter registration efforts were held during New Student Orientation, and fall 2024 programming and activities are underway to encourage students to understand and engage in our democracy. Buffalo State is aiming to proudly maintain our ALL-IN Campus Democracy Challenge and Voter-Friendly Campus designations.

We are off to a great start with our Voter Friendly 2024 Strategic Plan, engaging 882 students with voter education information, registering 296 students, tentatively raising our voter registration rate to 34.5 percent. Students were also equipped with a voter plan and a registration tool guide to help them aid others to register.
