The Geography and Planning Department and the Western New York Meteorological Society will host a Buffalo National Weather Service Winter SKYWARN training on Friday, November 4, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center 217.

SKYWARN is a national effort to save lives during severe weather emergencies with an expanding network of trained volunteer weather spotters. SKYWARN spotters support their local community and government by providing reports of severe winter weather directly to the National Weather Service in Buffalo by phone using the NWS spotter hotline. This basic training session will provide a brief overview of the National Weather Service organization, responsibilities, winter weather safety, and winter weather meteorology. Even if you have no intention of being a spotter, the training will provide you with a better understanding of winter weather. An added note: the Golden Snowball trophy (awarded to Buffalo last winter for being the snowiest city) will be on display.

The training is free and open to the public, and certainly open and free for Buffalo State students, staff, and faculty; however, the National Weather Service is requesting that participants register in advance. Thank you.
