Vida Vanchan, Interim Associate Dean, School of the Professions; Xingwang Qian, Professor, Economics and Finance

Xingwang Qian, professor of economics and finance and founding member of the Global Studies Institute, and Vida Vanchan, interim associate dean of the School of the Professions and director of the Global Studies Institute, presented their research paper, “Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in ASEAN Countries: US Decoupling Strategies?” at the annual New York Conference on Asian Studies (NYCAS), hosted by the University at Buffalo September 27–28. This study analyzed FDI flows of 180 countries from 2010 to 2022, including those of the U.S. to ASEAN countries and from other countries. It revealed the complementary effects between FDI and trade, U.S. withdrawal from world affairs during the Trump administration; and the increased ties and trade flows from and among other developing countries to and within Southeast Asia.
