Update on the Dr. Katherine S. Conway-Turner Office of Civic and Community Engagement

It is with a deep sense of gratitude and reflection that I share news about an important transition: As of August 1, 2025, the Dr. Katherine S. Conway-Turner Office of Civic and Community Engagement (CCE), which has served as a vital bridge between Buffalo State and the wider community since 2003, has concluded its current chapter of service.

Over the years, CCE has fostered meaningful partnerships across our campus and community. CCE programs have helped with the resettlement of displaced persons, education of local youth, clean-up and improvements of our urban area, community gardening efforts, and many other core activities that serve to enhance our Anchor Institution mission and have helped us achieve the prestigious Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement. The CCE office has also spearheaded our voter engagement activities, which have been recognized with a designation as a Voter Friendly Campus and a Bronze award by the All In Campus Democracy Challenge.

While the CCE office as an administrative unit is no longer active, this change does not signal a departure from our deep and ongoing commitment to civic and community engagement. Faculty will continue to use service-learning in their teaching, and our students and staff will remain active in volunteer and civic efforts, including nonpartisan voter engagement.

At Buffalo State, our identity as an anchor institution is central to who we are. Our unwavering commitment to community and civic engagement is not only a point of pride but a foundational pillar of our mission. We actively leverage our resources, partnerships, and expertise to support and uplift the Buffalo community.

Buffalo State remains proud of the many offices and centers that carry forward this work daily—such as Continuing Professional Studies, Professional Development Schools, the Small Business Development Center, the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the Great Lakes Center, the Anne Frank Project, and the Performing Arts Center. These efforts reflect our sustained dedication to engaging meaningfully with our urban community and embody our sustained and intentional efforts to foster meaningful, reciprocal relationships with the community.

We are currently exploring ways to strengthen and streamline how we support community partnerships across campus. Future plans include updates to the Anchor Institution website and possible inclusion of additional programs that already exist on campus.

Please stay tuned for updates to the website as we evolve our structures to better support Buffalo State’s mission and values. We look forward to sharing more soon.
