Simulcast Film Screening: 'Breaking the Cycle' - October 1

The Global Studies Institute at Buffalo State University is pleased to present a timely documentary on Thailand, Breaking the Cycle, on Tuesday, October 1, at 6:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center 423. The film is presented in conjunction with the SUNY/CUNY Southeast Asia Consortium and the Graduate Education and Training in Southeast Asian Studies (GETSEA) consortium.

Directed by Aekaphong Saransate and Thanakrit Duangmaneeporn, the film tracks the rise and fall of Thailand’s Freedom Forward Party and the political movement to restrain the Thai military’s power in 2018, before the party was dissolved by the Constitutional Court in 2020. The de facto successor party to the movement was again dissolved by the Constitutional Court in August 2024. The film has been a hit in Thailand and at film festivals since its release in May and offers an amazing insight into the history of military rule in Thailand. The event will be simulcast at over 20 universities across North America, including Cornell, Yale, and Harvard universities.

Popcorn will be provided.
