Accessibility Tip of the Day: Copyrighted & Published PDF Content

Posted:

A PDF can be created in many ways, and an accessible PDF is a document that is universally easy to use and meets established accessibility standards. If you have PDF files that do not meet accessibility standards, here are some options.

Type: Articles downloaded from a library database

Solution:

Step 1. Utilize a permalink from the library database subscription where available and link in Brightspace. Permalinks provide the library with critical usage analytics used in collection development decisions and access the latest and most accessible version of the article.

Step 2. Work with a librarian through the PDF Exchange for an accessible version or for permalink.

Step 3. Some resources are not available in our library subscriptions. We cannot remediate unlicensed content due to copyright restrictions.

Type: Scanned book chapter, short work of fiction, or essay

Solution:

Step 1: Please contact the library to verify if this is available through the library's subscription databases in an electronic and accessible format. Work with a librarian through the PDF Exchange for assistance.

Step 2: Scan the book chapter, preferably use the KIC scanner located in the library.

Image files must go through the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to convert the text to readable text. Be sure to follow appropriate copyright laws under 17 U.S.C. ยง 107 Fair Use.

Note: This process does not tag images and does not make the content 100% accessible but it will allow a screen reader to dictate the content.

Faculty and staff members are encouraged to register for training sessions periodically listed in the Buffalo State Workshop Registration System, and/or contact SAS Content Access for support. For more information about the PDF Exchange, please contact Chris Hulsman, electronic and educational resources librarian
