Anansi and the Secrets of Black Well-Being: November 5
"Are Black people allowed to care for themselves?" This is the question being posed and discussed at an upcoming event called “Anansi and the Secrets of Black Well-Being” hosted by the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor on Wednesday, November 5, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Heritage Corridor Visitors Center at 136 Broadway, Buffalo, New York 14203.
Students from Buffalo State’s Africana Studies program will be reciting their originally crafted Anansi stories and leading the audience through a series of panel discussions focused on Black well-being. In a course called “Why Africa Matters,” students created updated versions of the West African "Anansi-the-Spider" tales to reflect current struggles facing Black communities. Come hear their stories, see how young adults view the world, and consider what they think is important for a Black future defined by holistic health. At the same time, witness and participate in a collaboration between campus and community, where we break down the lines that divide us because we feel it’s time to work together and enjoy each other’s company while doing so.
The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Guests may park in the parking lot next to the Heritage Corridor Visitors Center building.
