Seminar: “Control of Thirst by Glucagon-like Peptide-1” - March 2

Posted:

Please join the Biology Department and the Great Lakes Center for the seminar “Control of thirst by glucagon-like peptide-1,” presented by Dr. Derek Daniels on Monday, March 2, at 3:00 p.m. in SAMC 151.

Research Seminar Abstract: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) has become well recognized as a target for the treatment of obesity. In addition to the suppression of food intake caused by GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists, these drugs also suppress fluid intake. Understanding how this occurs provides opportunities to develop more selective treatments and serves as an important avenue to understand central controls of thirst. This seminar will describe work by our research lab demonstrating the thirst suppression by GLP-1R agonists and will explain how we concluded that endogenous GLP-1 in the central nervous system plays a role in the control of thirst. The presentation will also describe experiments using vasopressin-deficient Brattleboro rats to parse the role played by GLP-1 in drinking and in eating.
