Sustainability: Single-Use Plastics Policy
The Buffalo State Sustainability Task Force, in partnership with Procurement Services, reminds the campus community of SUNY Policy 5201, Elimination of Single-Use Plastics and Preference for Durable and Reusable Alternatives (SUP). This policy requires SUNY campuses and affiliated organizations to comply with state procurement laws and eliminate plastic items commonly designed for single use. This initiative aligns with Governor Hochul’s Executive Order 22 (EO22). Campuses must submit annual reports demonstrating compliance with both EO22 and SUP requirements.
To support the SUP policy, SUNY has developed specific timelines in Procedure 5200. Effective August 1, 2025, State funds may not be used to purchase plastic water bottles, utensils, straws, or celebration balloons. Faculty and staff are encouraged to consider these guidelines when making purchases and to contact Procurement (purchasing@buffalostate.edu) for suggestions on suitable alternatives.
We also encourage all members of the campus community to review the SUNY Climate and Sustainability Action Plan, which includes numerous recommendations organized under the broad areas of Climate and Governance, Education, Research, Workforce, Facilities, Operations, and Engagement and Justice.
